Lately, I cross out anything that doesn’t look neat when I write by hand – or meet a standard of feeling like my best. I do this because that line drawn through a word is me acknowledging that a mistake was made. It reminds me that it’s more worthwhile to write in a way that meets the “my best” standard. It shows a willingness to hold myself accountable to a particular standard. Most importantly, it reflects thoughtfulness about what I am doing. The next words that I write are where the opportunity for growth happens.
