I say “the results and consequences of one’s actions.”

And so do not focus on “tomrorrow” as if it is something real. Instead, do what must be done today, now – only focusing on this moment – and then be at peace with your effort.

Apply critical thinking to create a better plan

The first person you need to recruit for your company is yourself. You need to identify all of the ways that you are the right person and the wrong person for the job. Where are your weaknesses, insecurities, and blind spots? What are the things that drive you to keep improving? What are the differences that you bring to the table and the expertise that gives you an edge? When you start to apply critical thinking to your own involvement and capacity you can create a better path forward than you would otherwise.

Build your business with urgency

Be mindful to be building and learning at the same time. Business is a serious pursuit. Therefore, dedicate and commit the attention it needs to grow. Focus on building something that is simple first. Ask yourself: how fast can you get the phone to start ringing? Focus on trying to become operational in one month. Be healthy in the process because if you are a healthier person then you will be better at everything you do in your life.

Levels of Greatness

What makes someone great is only the beginning. There is another level: This is a product of the people and environment around them that keep nudging and inspiring them to realize full potential. This is the context that is preventing dullness and lax from creeping into ones mind and taking up permanent residence. And so, it is not enough to list the qualities of what will make someone great at a given endeavor. It is essential to also identify the context that will encourage someone to become even greater.

Focusing on your lived experience

You are a multiplication of unique experiences. I think this is why comparison is such a strange phenomenon. It’s not actually possible because we can’t be a product of something that was lived by someone else. And so instead focus on understanding and studying your experiences. Analyze and dissect them up to a point. And then take another action that is informed by these reflections.

Avoid the trap of overconfidence

Never expect the second chance to be the same as the first. It’s easy to think that a similar situation has all of the same qualities as what preceded. This is a mistake. Instead approach any new situation as if you are seeing it for the first time. Except use your past experience as a way to upgrade your ability to pay attention and notice nuance and detail. This puts you in a better position to avoid the trap of being overconfident.

Allow a powerful mission to drive you forward

Chance will always play a role. Dedicating yourself to a mission that feels pre-ordained can be a powerful driver of action towards results in the face of uncertainty.

Exercise control in the face of unknowns

Walk into any situation with your eyes wide open. This means that you need to see and accept the realities, rewards, and risks of the endeavor. There is no “I didn’t know”, or “I didn’t anticipate” as an excuse because when your eyes are wide open you are already knowing that any number of unknowns or unknowable unknowns can arise. This approach allows you to be more relaxed and centered on the things that you can control.

Limiting the execuses you give yourself

Use your current decade of life to do all of the things you wish you had done two decades ago that would have, had you done them, put you in a better position to be achieving greatness today. And so if you are in your 30s, use 30s to 40s to do the things you wish you had done or known in your teenage years that you think would be helping you right now. This kind of thought experiment and approach limits the number of excuses you can give yourself for not taking action on the good information and wisdom that you have right now.

The beauty of responsibilities

Assuming certain responsibilities comes with consequences. It’s never a free pass. This means you must be ready. And do not be mistaken by expecting that anyone will come to your rescue in difficult moments. Instead, accept that these moments are the best part of taking on the responsibilities.
